- São Paulo, Brazil
- A city of towers... most with only one luxury apartment per floor
- And a city of favelas, or slums... although the favellas are masonry
- some of the high rises are occupied by the poor, too
- São Paulo shopping street: as elegant and sophisticated as any in Europe
- the “vacant storefront”...
- ... attracts a lot of attention
- another view
- the people of means live in their own personal prisons...
- … inside the few open fronts, people literally live “behind bars”
- meat hooks atop retrofitted security wall on older house
- this wall is topped with little daggers
- no kidding... the guy’s shirt says “VIGILANTE”... one on every block
- can you imagine a more unfriendly house frontage? If not, scroll on...
- the view down the sidewalk
- steel-plated front door...
- and how it looks from across the street
- another front wall, this one topped with a high voltage electric fence
- people set up shop IN THE FAST LANE because traffic is so slow...
- ... so slow, in fact, that a trip by car across town can take 8 HOURS...
- ... as a result, all the wealthy people take helicopters across town
- even the 34-wheelers must crawl by at walking speed
- nonetheless, how would you feel if this were your daughter?
- security equipment is everywhere
- the spirit of fear pervades the city...
- and it produces the architecture of fear
